Winter blahs.

The past two days have been very grey, snotty, pyjama-all-day sort of days.
Aesop has a hacking cough, I have a scratchy throat and poor wee Otto has gunky eyes, snotty nose and a constant, roaring temperature. We are a sad bunch.
Actually, I'm finding everything hard going at the moment. I seem to get to this point every Winter.
It's cold, it's too hard to get motivated, we're sick, we're tired, I eat too much comfort food, Aesop complains 'cause he is bored but it is too rainy to go out.. blah blah blah. 'The blahs'.
But I am working hard to over come them. I've signed out of my facebook page for two weeks (I am cheating and checking my profile when Abraham signs in, but won't get messages or read my feed etc. And, most importantly, I won't spend hours and hours playing addictive games!), and am attempting to get some crafting done. I am going to use Abraham's week off next week as a good chance to get some well-needed exercise, and will make sure to be knitting while I 'blob' in front of the telly, to ease the guilt. I have written a list of things to do with the kids for the rest of the holidays to prevent too much nagging, arguing and frustration.

I'm also trying to cherish the good moments that we have, like making the most of our snotty faces and having woolly moustaches, eating nummy food, finishing the body of the cardi I'm making for my new niece or nephew (come on out little one, we want to come visit!), listening to great music (loving Laura Marling, Joanna Newsom, Alela Diane and She and him today..) and receiving incredible parcels from my twinny-twin-twin.
What do you do to get over 'The blahs'?

  1. hmmn. yeah exercise always makes you feel better after the fact. its just getting started that's the hard part. And snail mail has got to help! You want more? Flick me your addy and I'll happily contribute a little something to the 'cheer up Rhiannon' cause...

  2. Hah, as you know I'm in the same situation myself. Haven't figured out how to get rid of them yet though. I think I need a few goals... that driving one is looking pretty scary but tempting right now. x

  3. Occasionally a little excursion even though it is too rainy can be fun; wrap up warm and water-proof(-ish), set the thermostat so the house will be cozy when you get back. go out and keep moving fast, don't try to run errands or anything but just to run/see/splash/laugh/get out of breath. then come back for warm baths/dry clothes/blankets/fire/an excuse for cocoa. plus worn-out boys who will doubtless sleep better for the air & exercise!

  4. sounds just like my house, we are back to kindy next week so looking forward to that, we made a birdfeeder yesterday which was fun, i've posted it... and today i'm going to go for a walk, I am always happy i've done that once i'm out of the house, its just the leaving the house part thats hard !!

  5. I'm so happy I found your blog again! I used to read ages ago and lost track of you...anyway! Your newest little boy is just lovely :) Hehe, cute idea for snotty noses! I would do anything for some winter weather at the moment (I'm in Canada and it is scorchingly hot here) minus the colds though :) Hope you are all feeling better soon!

  6. are you getting better now? You may try Nin Jiom Pei Pa Koa ( i know alot of people use it, its also non alcoholic, though it’s effectiveness is not as good as alcohol based cough medicine, but it’s still good to use on not so serious scratchy throat.
