Looking at these pictures, you would think we have curtains in our dining/lounge area. But, unfortunately, it's all an illusion. These 'curtains' are actually just pieces of fabric, on ridiculously small curtain rails, that do not actually cover anything. Weird, right?
Well, truth be told, I actually don't mind the faux drapes. They are definitely 'in keeping' with the rest of the decor. But, here is my dilemma, does the area look less 'busy' and more spacious without them? I couldn't take photos of the room as a whole, because of the glare (and the mess, but shhhh!) but you get a bit of an idea.

So, dear lovely people, should I wash/mend and rehang them? Or should I pack them neatly in the cupboard with all the other weird curtains/blinds/ lightshades I've removed or replaced? Should they stay or should they go now?
(Also, is there a trick to cleaning blinds? Or do I just have to spend another 3 hours with a cloth and jif? Least favourite job EVER.)

I like it without the curtains, mainly because I'm not so fond of the colour and it looks lighter and fresher without them. What a strange decorating feature!
ReplyDeleteIt does look less mesy without them, but put them back up if you don't mind the mesy look.
ReplyDeleteI like without too. Funnily enough our house also had those strange curtains when we moved in here ~~ although ours were pink. blergth!
ReplyDeleteI agree about not hanging the curtains back up! I'm slowly replacing (most) of the curtains with roman blinds because I think it helps to make the room look bigger. I think in those funny little catalogues that appear in the mailbox from time to time (you know, the ones with the clocks that make a different bird noise every hour and the croaking motion sensor frogs for the garden) you can get a multipronged duster thingee that fits in the blinds, but that would only be good for dusting, not so much cleaning I suppose.
ReplyDeleteI vote no curtains too. And I have heard of people removing the blinds and dunking them in the bath to clean them! :)
ReplyDeleteI saw on a TV show once 'Lush House' with Shannon Lush - she made blind cleaners using tongs and cut pieces of sponge and attached them to the end of the tongs with rubber bands. Then you just dip the sponges in warm water maybe with a bit of dishwash liquid and run the tongs along each blind. We've got heaps of wooden blinds in our house and I tried it once and it worked great.
ReplyDeletei'm the proverbial 'spanner in the works'...i vote YES to curtains!! the first pic without them looks like an empty home, being advertised for sale!
ReplyDelete(i like the colour and the homely-ness too)

I think I like it better without!! Hey I'm your partner for the kitchen swap!! love kitchen goodies :) am excited about making your package.
ReplyDeleteLooks great without them! Don't know what it is, maybe just seems more 'open.'
ReplyDeleteBy the way, I love your roll top writing desk!
dunno. it looks nice and light without them, but they do kinda 'go' with the house...
ReplyDeleteI prefer them without the curtains - makes everything look so much brighter!
ReplyDeletewithout, for sure .... although i have just had one of those manic mornings tidying and biffing all sorts of stuff out so i'm in that mood today ...
ReplyDeleteI prefer without :)
ReplyDeleteI think without looks fresher, but if it ever gets really cool where you are, you might like some real curtains that you can pull shut over the windows to contain the heat.
ReplyDeleteHa faux curtains. hilarious. I think I prefer without too. And blinds, I got this wee "tool" from spotlight made for cleaning blinds. It has about 5 fluffy prongs coming of a handle and its made especially for the job. ill send you a pic of it, see if you can get one, it cleans the top and bottom part of multiple slats at once. Brilliant!
ReplyDeleteSans curtains is better. I'd take the blinds down, hang them over the clothes line and blast them with a hose - easy peasy.
ReplyDeleteThe horizontal blinds...my mother made me stand over them with dish washing liquid and a hose on the front lawn once. I do like the colour the faux blinds add....but if you do without them you will have more space to hang pics perhaps?
ReplyDeleteI say without too especially as they aren't functional they are just hanging collecting dust and who needs more dust??? Just found your blog LOVE the Friday finds and the beautiful dark blue cup and saucer set.
